Facebook recently released a newer version of their messaging platform called Facebook Messages/Mail. This has been handed over to only a handful of users for testing as of now. And now, to our surprise, Microsoft has officially announced that Facebook Messages will be able to share Microsoft Office documents with their friends.
This is what the Official statement says:
Facebook’s new messaging platform integrates the Office Web Apps to enable Facebook users to view Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents with just one click. As you know, Office helps you create stunning documents that bring your ideas to life. Now you can easily share those ideas with your friends and family on Facebook. I’m really excited about being able to make it even easier for people to use Office to access and share information across different devices, networks and platforms. With the Office Web Apps on Facebook, you have even more ways to express yourself with Office and easily share your thoughts with people that are important to you.
Looks like Facebook will have two options to handle Office documents. One, “View on Office.com” and two, “Download”. Reports say that Office integration of Facebook Messages is also significant. May be, they will provide some POP or IMAP for Facebook Messages, allowing you to configure and get connected via Outlook. We will have to wait for such big announcements. I’m sure this would put a slight pressure on Google. But Google will definitely be the leader for the next few decades of GMail and Documents sharing.
